County Fair Experience

May 4, 2012

Miss. Deniz's class went on a fieldtrip to the Tulare County Fair. We watched mimes do tricks. The man called me up on stage. HE PICKED ME!!! He told me I would not look crazy and he put crazy accessories on me. I heard everyone laughing and I knew something on me was funny. He put a soccer ball on my foot, a kazoo in my mouth and told be to blow. I was embarrassed but it was very funny. He got a dollar and folded it into a bird. It was a great experience! Thank you HEART!

3rd Annual MILO Modeling Expo

May 4, 2012

The 3rd annual M.I.L.O. Modeling Expo, put together by the H.E.A.R.T. After School Program, was a wonderful success! On Friday evening, May 4th, over 150 family and friends gathered at Cafe 210, in downtown Visalia, to see HEART Students from Redwood, Golden West, and Mount Whitney strut their stuff down the runway, and show off their newly-found confidence. There were a total of 24 student models, who each had the opportunity to model their runway skills twice, showing off clothing donated by JC Penney, Old Navy, and Sears. There was a friendly - but fierce - model "walk-off" competition, in which 2 students from each school were chosen to face-off and display their inner Tyra Banks! It was a tough competition, but in the end, Mount Whitney took the prize!

The MILO / HEART Student fashion show was an evening full of fun, laughter, fashion, and a true display of inspiration. Emcee Frank Escobar kept the Cafe's energy level to a maximum, as he made sure to keep the audience entertained and laughing while they enjoyed the show. The courage these students had to get on that stage and show their family & friends that they have the confidence, ability, and determination to achieve this was inspiring to us all - and rock it they did! We are so proud to be able to do this for our students, and are looking forward to more events just like this one.

"This is the second H.E.A.R.T. / M.I.L.O. show I have had the privilege to coordinate and witness, and to see the change in our students from our last show to now...is truly unbelievable. The confidence level in these students has grown so much - and that is the reason we do this! If this program has the ability to transform body image from negative to positive for just one student, it was all worth it. To transform body image of 24 students, well that is more than we can ask for." - Amy Worsham, Site Director, Redwood High School

"I am so proud of all the high school students. It makes all the work well worth it, when you see their smiles light up on stage. You truly see their inner & outer beauty shine, and that makes me so proud to be a program leader and do what we do!" Melinda Sanchez, Program Leader, Redwood High School

Quotes from a HEART Parent

May 8, 2012

Dear Laurie,

It was a pleasure to talk with you at the Rawhide game, and once again I would like to express my gratitude to you for the important job you do. I greatly appreciate the valuable resource you and your organization offer our youth and the community. This afternoon's event is just one example of how the HEART program enhances the lives of so many young people, and it is all made possible through the hard work and dedication of yourself, board members, and staff.

"As a parent the HEART program provides me with the benefit of knowing my child is being provided a safe, enriching, and educational environment: a place she can grow academically, socially, and emotionally." Moreover, "The HEART after-school program positively impacts our community, by providing children the highest quality of care, while encouraging parent and community involvement, as a parent I feel extremely fortunate that my child and family are a part of such an amazing program." In fact, "I believe that the HEART program is one of the strongest advocates for children in Tulare County, the service they provide our community is invaluable, and one that is cherished by so many, my family included."

I am honored that you value the perspective of parents such as myself, and thank you for allowing me the opportunity to express my appreciation to you and your organization.

Sincerely,

Cozette Santos
Conyer HEART program parent

Sweet Dreams for HEART

April, 2012

Sweet Dreams has chosen Pro-Youth/HEART to highlight for their next event. Café 210 has already offered their venue for this event on Friday, May 25th from 5:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. The event will be all-ages, family friendly and involves craft tables for making various art projects, with live music, a silent auction, refreshments, photo booth (courtesy of Visalia Photo Booth) and artwork displayed to fundraise for Pro-Youth/HEART.

This event is being hosted entirely by the volunteers of Sweet Dreams, at no cost Pro-Youth, is free to the community and all proceeds raised will benefit the Pro-Youth/HEART After-School Program.

Our HEART sites will become involved by submitting artwork to showcase Café 210 and also by having our High School students perform. This is a great opportunity to showcase the talent of those in the HEART program and promote the Pro-Youth/HEART After-School Program. Sweet Dreams is also accepting donations for the silent auction if anyone would like to donate!

This is going to be a fun event and many of our HEART staff are volunteering their time and resources to ensure everything goes smoothly! HEART children and their parents will also be in attendance. If you are interested in attending and would like more information, please let me know!
