HEART has consistently invested in research-based academic intervention programs to supplement and support school-day learning. Every HEART elementary school program uses Odyssey by Compass Learning which is aligned to state standards, as our internal intervention program for Reading, Language Arts and Mathematics. Odyssey features curricula that provide additional tools to help teach, guide, and clarify concepts for struggling students. It also gives students opportunities to use higher-order thinking skills. Odyssey reflects the most current, confirmed research about how students engage, think and learn; it promotes exploration, cooperative learning, problem solving, reflection, and real-world connections - all while engaging students' imaginations.

Each Elementary School Site has a dedicated AIS (Academic Intervention Specialist) whose primary responsibility is to oversee the implementation and conduct of Odyssey services to those children who most need it. This is largely based on our own STAR assessments, which are conducted three times a year, also overseen by the resident AIS. Based on these scores (for Math and for Language Arts), a student may be identified as requiring either Math or Language Arts intervention, or both, or neither. Once selected, a student will be placed in an Intervention "semester" in order to receive the full benefit of Odyssey intervention. There are two such semesters per school year.

The AIS also compiles the STAR scores and is responsible for reporting these to their Site Director, and also to a central team of Senior AIS. This central team is charged with ensuring a common high standard of implementation as well as supporting the daily specialized needs of the AIS.
